Roofing Contractor in Elgin, IL — Family-Owned Since 1979
DFC Roofing has been roofing Elgin homes and buildings since 1979 — from the Victorian housing stock in the historic districts near the old Elgin National Watch Company site, to the post-war neighborhoods east of the river, to the newer subdivisions out past Randall Road.
Elgin has more roofing variety than any other town we serve, and it needs different answers. A 1910 house near National Street and a 2003 house off Bowes Road have almost nothing in common structurally. We have worked on both for 47 years.

Elgin Has the Oldest Housing Stock in the Fox Valley
Elgin has roughly 40,500 housing units, and the mix is unlike anywhere else nearby: 18.9% were built before 1940 and about 41% before 1970. The median Elgin home dates to 1977. (Source: CMAP Community Data Snapshot, ACS 2020–2024.)
On the older houses that usually means steep pitches, complex rooflines, original board decking rather than plywood, and often two or three layers of shingles already in place. Illinois code allows a maximum of two roof coverings, so a third layer is not an option — and on board decking a tear-off frequently turns up boards that need replacing before anything new goes down.
We quote decking replacement as a per-sheet or per-board unit price up front, so if we find rot you already know what it costs. Nobody likes a number invented on the day the roof is open.
Elgin's post-war and 1970s neighborhoods are a different job again: simpler roofs, plywood decking, and very often inadequate attic ventilation that has been quietly cooking shingles from underneath for decades. We look at intake and exhaust ventilation on every Elgin estimate, because replacing shingles without fixing airflow just starts the same clock again.
Recent Storms Over Elgin
April 27, 2026. A wake low produced strong non-thunderstorm winds across the area; the National Weather Service recorded that siding was removed from a house as the winds moved through Elgin, with the event peaking at 72 mph near Sandwich.
April 14, 2026. Wind damage was reported one mile west of Elgin at 9:57 PM — a large tree brought down onto wires along Chicago Street.
June 24, 2026. Flooding and 1.82 inches of rain were recorded just west-northwest of Elgin. The same evening the Weather Service documented a corridor of 70–75 mph straight-line winds immediately east of town through Streamwood, Bartlett and Hanover Park.
Wind damage is easier to miss than hail. Shingles that lifted and reseated have usually broken their seal strip, and they will blow off in the next storm rather than this one. That is worth a look from the roof, not from the driveway.
Permits in Elgin
The City of Elgin handles roofing permits through its Community Development department, and publishes a roof-repair quick permit process for straightforward reroofs. DFC Roofing pulls the permit, schedules the inspection and meets the inspector on site.
Illinois licenses roofing contractors at state level, and the law requires the license number to appear on advertising, contracts and permits. Ours is 104.004825. If a contractor knocking on doors in Elgin after a storm cannot give you theirs, that tells you what you need to know.
