DFC Roofing project

Roofing Contractor in Sugar Grove, IL

Sugar Grove was founded in spring 1834 by six men who sheltered in an abandoned Native American sugar camp before building their first cabin — the local name Sin-Qua-Sip became Sugar Grove. It stayed small for a long time, incorporating in 1957 with a population of 125.

It is now a village of 9,200 with the most thoroughly documented recent storm history of anywhere we work — including a measured 85 mph gust in August 2026. DFC Roofing is about 35 minutes north in South Elgin.

Two-Thirds of the Village Was Built in One Twenty-Year Stretch

Sugar Grove has about 3,558 housing units, and 66.2% of them were built between 1990 and 2009 — the tightest single-cohort concentration of any village we serve. The median year built is 2002, with 13.8% from the 1970s and 80s and 13.3% since 2010. Owner-occupancy is 93.1%. (Source: CMAP Community Data Snapshot, ACS 2020–2024.)

About 26.4% is single-family attached, so there is meaningful townhome and association work here alongside the detached housing.

Two-thirds of a village hitting 17 to 36 years old at once is exactly the pattern that produces three tear-offs on one street in a single summer. If your neighbors are replacing, it is worth knowing where your own roof stands — not because you necessarily need one, but because you should not find out during a February leak.

Sugar Grove Took a Measured 85 mph Gust in August 2026

August 11, 2026 — derecho. The National Weather Service recorded a measured 85 mph gust at Aurora Municipal Airport (KARR), on the northwest side of Sugar Grove, at 10:11 AM, with a trained spotter reporting significant tree damage in town at the same minute. A home weather station two minutes later recorded 97 mph — we note that separately because it is a personal station rather than a calibrated instrument, and the 85 mph airport reading is the figure we would stand behind.

Corroborating readings that morning: a measured 89 mph three miles southeast of Batavia at 10:24 AM, snapped tree branches four miles west-northwest of Batavia, a large tree uprooted near Kautz Road and New York Street, large branches down across St. Charles, and a 12-to-18-inch tree snapped near Big Rock.

April 27, 2026. A wake-low wind event produced a measured 67 mph gust at the same airport station at 1:03 PM. The same afternoon, siding was removed from a house in Campton Hills.

June 10, 2026 — derecho. Trees and power lines down on Bliss Road, two miles north-northeast of the village, at 3:07 PM.

March 30, 2026. Half-dollar hail, 1.25 inches, three miles southeast of Sugar Grove at 10:18 PM.

That is two derechos, a wake low and a hail event inside eighteen months. Eighty-five mile-per-hour wind does not usually strip a roof bare — it breaks shingle seal strips, lifts and drops shingles, tears flashing loose and pulls ridge caps. From the ground the roof looks fine. It fails in the next storm.

Sugar Grove Roofing Questions

How strong were the winds in Sugar Grove during the August 2026 derecho?
The National Weather Service recorded a measured 85 mph gust at Aurora Municipal Airport on the northwest side of the village at 10:11 AM on August 11, 2026, with a trained spotter reporting significant tree damage in town. A nearby home weather station recorded 97 mph two minutes later, though that is a personal station rather than a calibrated one.
My roof looks fine after that storm. Should I still have it checked?
Yes. Eighty-five mph wind breaks shingle seal strips without necessarily removing shingles, so the roof looks intact from the driveway and then fails in the next storm. The estimate is free, takes about 45 minutes, and you get the photos whether or not you file a claim or hire us.
What does a roofing permit cost in Sugar Grove?
The village publishes $100.00 for a re-roof or new roof. Contractors must also be registered with the village before a permit is issued - we handle the registration and the permit.
